The home of the Hopman Cup for a quarter of a century will soon fall to the wrecking ball in Perth as the Burswood Dome finally arrives at the end of its working life. The structure hosted January’s annual international mixed team competition from its start in the late 1980s until the 2012 edition.,
The 2013 iteration of the event was held in the new Perth area in the centre of the city. The Dome with his inflatable roof was for years the go-to venue in isolated Western Australia for both the annual tennis extravaganza and frequent concerts.
Demolition was delayed for years by state political infighting and the practical need to have a venue ready for the new year, a prime week in the city’s social calendar marked by its New Year’s Eve ball.
Once the arena was completed, the Dome, now owned by the adjacent Crown casino, got the go ahead to be demolished. It is due to be replaced by a mundane parking lot. In addition to the tennis, the Dome hosted musical artists from Mick Jagger, to AC-DC to the Beach Boys over its long lifespan.
