Birmingham
Singles – Quarterfinal: Donna Vekic def. (3) Sorana Cirstea 6-2 6-1
The awful results for high seeds continue here. Sorana Cirstea loses her Top Twenty chance.
Singles – Quarterfinal: Daniela Hantuchova def. (15) Francesca Schiavone 6-7(8-10) 6-4 7-6(7-3)
It took three hours and 22 minutes (and how does a grass match ever last that long?), but Daniela Hantuchova is finally earning some points. She is still only about #58, though. She costs Francesca Schiavone her Top Forty chance.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (16) Magdalena Rybarikova def. Madison Keys 6-3 6-0
We don’t know how we would figure out which event is the rainiest on the WTA Tour, but Birmingham has to be up there. There was more rain on Friday, with Magdalena Rybarikova being lucky enough to be an early finisher. She is now one win from the Top Forty; Madison Keys stays just short of the Top Fifty.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Barthel/Mladenovic def. (1) Kops-Jones/Spears 2-6 7-5 10-6
Kristina Mladenovic remains magical in doubles. At the rate she’s going, she may be the top seed at this time next year….
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Barty/Dellacqua def. Kudryavtseva/Rodionova 7-6 4-6 10-5
The big surprises of the Australian Open are at it again….
Nurnberg
Singles – Semifinal: (WC) Andrea Petkovic def. (1) (WC) Jelena Jankovic 6-4 6-3
The stunning resurrection of Andrea Petkovic continues; this gives her nine straight wins. She is back up to around #75, meaning that she doesn’t have to worry about injury protection any more except at the stronger Premier events. And it seems clear that she will keep climbing. Jelena Jankovic will remain at #16 — which, of course, will earn her the #16 Wimbledon seed. Not that she likes grass much — notice that she played clay this week.
Singles – Semifinal: (7) Simona Halep def. (5) Lucie Safarova 6-3 0-6 6-2
Lucie Safarova loses her shot at a Top 24 Wimbledon seed. We show her at #28. Simona Halep moves into the Top Fifty; a title would put her around #45.
Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Groenefeld/Peschke def. Hrdinova/Irigoyen 6-2 6-4
Doubles – Semifinal: Olaru/Solovieva def. Krunic/Piter 6-2 6-1
Wimbledon Seed Update
Not much change from what we told you yesterday. Here is our seed list update:
1-4: Serena Williams, Azarenka, Sharapova, Agnieszka Radwanska
5-8: Errani, Li, Kerber, Kvitova
9-12: Wozniacki, Kirilenko, Vinci, Ivanovic
13-16: Petrova, Stosur, Bartoli, Jankovic
#17-#24 are should be Stephens, Cibulkova, Suarez Navarro, Flipkens, Pavlyuchenkova, Cirstea, Lisicki, and Peng.
#25-#32 are likely to be Makarova, Kuznetsova, Lepchenko, Safarova, Paszek, Cornet, Barthel, and Oprandi.
Alternates are Zakopalova, Venus Williams, and Goerges. Rybarikova could still rise to be an alternate, but she can’t quite catch Oprandi.
