Roland Garros
Doubles – Final: (4) Makarova/Vesnina def. (1) Errani/Vinci 7-5 6-2
The author first saw Elena Vesnina playing in Challenger qualifying, most of a decade ago. She was clearly the hardest worker there, and she also had the best mix of tools. But she went nowhere in that Challenger.
Much of her career has been like that. She had enough finals, singles and doubles, to show that she was genuinely a top player. But she wasn’t winning. Three Slam finals (Roland Garros 2009 with Azarenka, Wimbledon 2010 with Zvonareva, Roland Garros 2011 with Mirza); no results. The nerves just seemed to get to her. Just as they did in all her singles finals. But, this year, she won that elusive singles title. And now — her first Slam. Think she was excited?
Ekaterina Makarova officially already had a Slam title. But that was in Mixed. The simple fact is, this is a much, much bigger thing. Makarova only recently became a significant doubles player. She’s gone to the top fast.
The top in more ways than just having a Slam trophy, in fact. We show her rising from #7 to #5. Vesnina rises from #9 to #7. In singles, the great Russian explosion of a few years back seems to be almost over. Not so in doubles; they have three Top Ten players: Petrova, Makarova, and Vesnina. They in fact had four coming in — Maria Kirilenko was Top Ten also, but didn’t contest Roland Garros this year.
There may be a lot of Russians in the Top Ten, but Italy still has the Top Two in Errani and Vinci; they remain more than 2000 points ahead of #3 Petrova. But they no longer look like absolute locks for the year end #1 — favorites, yes, but not locks. There are a lot of players within striking distance, as our Top Ten estimate shows:
