Roland Garros

Singles – Semifinal: (3) R Nadal def. (1) N Djokovic 6-4 3-6 6-1 6-7(3-7) 9-7

This had a little of everything — Rafael Nadal was docked a point for slowness in the third set (not that it mattered much). Novak Djokovic took a bathroom/trainer break at a non-strategic time. In the final set, Djokovic lost a point for touching the net. He also complained about the clay getting too dry. And yet, somehow, it just seemed like another Nadal versus Djokovic match. A long Nadal versus Djokovic match. Nadal was two points away from the final in the fourth set, and blew it. Djokovic went up an early break in the fifth — and Nadal had broke back in game eight. Then came the un-dramatic ending: Djokovic made four errors, and that was that.

If Nadal wins the final, he will become the first man to win the same Slam eight times.

For Djokovic, it didn’t make much difference; he stays at #1. The main effect of a win would have been to bring him closer to earning the year-end #1. He’s still in very good shape. As for Nadal… he’s in another final, but whether he can stay at #4 depended on the outcome of the other semifinal….

Singles – Semifinal: (4) D Ferrer def. (6) J Tsonga 6-1 7-6(7-3) 6-2

If nothing else, David Ferrer will be a lot more rested for the Roland Garros final than Rafael Nadal.

If the day’s first match was high drama, this was pretty routine. Two hours, and David Ferrer was in his first Slam final. Ferrer won almost half the points on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s serve, and without his serve, Tsonga isn’t going to win much of anything. Still, he did well enough to rise to #7.

Ferrer is sure to rise, too — he will be at least #4, with Nadal falling to #5. If Ferrer can win his first Slam, he’ll make it all the way to #3, overtaking Roger Federer. But that means… beating Rafael Nadal in the Roland Garros final. Nadal has only once been beaten in Paris, and it wasn’t in the final. Of course, there is that big difference in rest….
