Maria Sharapova was taking a relaxed attitude a day before her French Open final with Serena Williams, with her first order of business being a meal at Roland Garros. “Have lunch,” the holder said when asked what she would do with her day before the weekend clash. “Right now I’m pretty hungry.”
There were also other options on the table: “I might go take a walk. I don’t think I’ll be doing any shopping. But, it’s really the usual, nothing that’s changing from the last few days.”
Sharapova has lost her last dozen meetings with Williams, winning her last match in that series in 2004. The underdog is trying to think positively. “Despite all those statistics, despite my unsuccessful record against her, it doesn’t matter because you’re at the French Open final. No matter how good she’s playing, you also have to give yourself a bit of credit for getting to that point and doing a few things right to be at that stage and giving yourself an opportunity.
“Whether you take it, that’s another story. Obviously, though, I’ll be determined tomorrow.”
