The expanding Sugarpova candy empire being built by Maria Sharapova is a project which the world number two believes will keep her partially occupied when she finally hangs up her racquets.
The Russian who is defending her French Open title believes that she needs to have a goal for her post-tennis life and would not be content to just relax with her multi-millions in earnings.
“Some people, once they’re done with what they’re doing, they just want to maybe kick back and relax on the couch. It’s a great life,” she said with a hint of doubt.
“They’re fortunate to make enough money to be able to do that,” said the biggest earner in worldwide women’s sport. “I’d lose my mind if I did that.
“As much as I like to be lazy a couple of days, I like to do things, I like being creative. I like making things happen. And I like exploring and trying, and whether that’s going to be successful or not, I’m really eager to learn.
“I do have my own business, but it’s, I mean, it’s candy. I’m like not on Wall Street. It’s just nice I think it’s always nice to see an athlete that has different interests, that goes beyond what they did in their sport.
“You don’t just finish a sport and think of what am I going to do now?
The successful people, at least that I have read about or kind of known, they always kind of worked on things throughout their career in order to set up something for later in their life, and that’s kind of how I have been through my tennis career,” added the 26-year-old with four Grand Slam titles.
