David Markin, 82, president of the USTA in 1989-90, died May 30 in Gainesville, Florida.
Markin and his wife, Tracy, were residents of Palm Beach and Dorset, Vt.
Markin was born in February 1931 in Great Neck, N.Y. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1958 from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill..
In the late 1950s, he began working in Chicago for businesses owned by his father, the late Morris Markin. He took over Checker Motors in 1970 upon the death of his father, who founded the company.
In 1989-90, Markin was president of the United States Tennis Association. He revitalized and Arthur Ashe Stadium was built. Not generally known was his significant performance in successfully bringing local labor unions to the bargaining table and agreeing to perform on behalf of the USTA. He also served as chairman of the Davis Cup Committee, as chairman of the Junior Tennis Council, and, for many years, as official referee for the National 16-18 Boys’ Championships in Kalamazoo.
Services are being held today at the MorseLife Foundation Traditions of the Palm Beaches Chapel, 4920 Loring Drive, West Palm Beach. A reception will follow.
