Novak Djokovic buried his grief after the death in Serbia of his first coach, posting a quiet 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over Philipp Kohlschreiber for a quarter-final place, then said he would try to win the tournament for the first time in the memory of Jelena Gencic, who died at age 77. “I want to win it for her,” said the top seed

Djokovic called Jencic his “second mother” who discovered him at age five and nurtured his talent through his childhood years in his war-torn homeland. “We were very close throughout my whole life and she taught me a lot of things that are part of me, of my character. I have the nicest memories of her,” said Djokovic.

“She’s one of the most incredible people that I know, it’s quite emotional. I know that her spirit will always be with me on the tennis court because that’s what she loved to do. It’s her favorite place in the world, I’ll make sure that her legacy continues.”

Djokovic will next face Tommy Haas after the 35-year-old became the oldest Grand Slam quarter-finalist since Andre Agassi in 2005 after a 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 thrashing of Mikhail Youzhny. The defeat featured a racquet smash by Youzhny which decapitated his stick. Haas has reached his first career quarter-final in Paris 14 years after his first at a major (1999 Australia).

“What I’m really proud is that I reached the quarters here for the first time. I never knew if that would be possible. It’s a great success for me,” said Haas.

Seven-time champion Rafael Nadal scored a routine win over Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 to set up a match with Swiss ninth seed Stanislas Wawrinka who defeated home hero Richard Gasquet 6-7 (5-7), 4-6, 6-4, 7-5,

8-6 after more than four hours of drama. Both men needed treatment on leg issues, with Wawrinka set to face Nadal after nine losses to the Spaniard, the most recent in the Madrid final three weeks ago.

Nadal celebrated his 27th birthday on court with not only a win but with a huge cake wheeled out onto centre court as well as presents which appeared to come from the Roland Garros onsite boutique.
