Roland Garros

Singles – Fourth Round: (2) R Federer def. (15) G Simon 6-1 4-6 2-6 6-2 6-3

Roger Federer obviously started strong. Then, early in the second set, he stumbled a bit, and seemed to burt something. Ankle? Wrist? Both? It really bothered him for two sets. Then he took a bathroom break, and clearly fixed whatever was wrong; he was on fire after that. And so he keeps alive his hopes of reaching #2. Assuming whatever it was he tweaked doesn’t get worse, anyway. Gilles Simon will probably be #17 or #18.

A news report noted that David Ferrer this week reached his sixth straight Slam quarterfinal. Which is fairly impressive. Until you realize that the last time Federer .failed to make a Slam quarterfinal was in 2004.

Singles – Fourth Round: (4) D Ferrer def. (23) K Anderson 6-3 6-1 6-1

This really was as lopsided as the score; David Ferrer was relentless. Kevin Anderson will be around #23; Ferrer, as the Feature shows, still has the chance to reach #4 — or even #3.

Singles – Fourth Round: (6) J Tsonga def. V Troicki 6-3 6-3 6-3

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defends his points; one more win would take him past Juan Martin del Potro to the #7 ranking. But he’s playing on clay…. Viktor Troicki is at least showing signs of life; by doing as well as he did, he rises to around #45.

Singles – Fourth Round: (32) T Robredo def. (11) N Almagro 6-7(5-7) 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-4

What a comeback this is turning into for Tommy Robredo! And we aren’t even talking about recovering from a two set deficit in this match, although that makes it even better. This matches Robredo’s result here in 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009, and it will take him to probably #27 or #28. But Nicolas Almagro, who was defending quarterfinalist points, is out of the Top Fifteen.

Doubles – First Round: Dimitrov/Nielsen def. Chardy/Kubot 6-2 6-7(5-7) 7-6(8-6)

This match had started the day before — but still, what a scheduling mess: First round and third round matches being played on the same day!

Doubles – Second Round: (2) Granollers/M Lopez def. Seppi/Troicki 6-3 6-2

Lopez and Granollers haven’t clinched the #3 and #4 spots, but it’s the way to bet, especially given how efficient they are looking. We currently estimate the Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) Bryan………….11310

1..(1) Bryan………….11310

3..(4) Lopez…………..5360

4..(5) Granollers………5360

5..(3) Lindstedt……….5260

6..(6) Bhupathi………..4920

7..(7) Tecau…………..4890

8.(11) Bopanna…………4715

9.(13) Soares………….4360

10..(9) Qureshi…………4310

11.(10) Rojer…………..4310

Doubles – Second Round: Kas/Marach def. (13) Benneteau/Zimonjic 6-4 5-7 6-1

Bad news for Nenad Zimonjic, who made the quarterfinal last year; he’ll be falling to around #20.

Doubles – Second Round:Bednarek/Janowicz def. Lorenzi/Starace 6-7(3-7) 6-3 7-6(7-4)

Doubles – Third Round: (16) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski def. Dasnieres de Veigy/Serra 6-4 6-3

Not a big deal by itself, but more evidence that Fyrstenberg/Matkowski may finally be coming back to life.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Jankovic/Paes def. Voskoboeva/Bracciali 7-5 6-3

What’s that old proverb again? “Old players never die, they just become mixed doubles specialists”? Leander Paes’s doubles ranking is going down fast, but he’s still the #1 man in mixed….

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (3) Srebotnik/Zimonjic def. Lim/Chardy 6-3 7-6(7-5)

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (4) Raymond/Soares def. Hlavackova/Dlouhy 6-2 4-6 14-12

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (5) Mladenovic/Nestor def. Zhang/Knowle 6-3 7-5

Daniel Nestor’s men’s doubles career is in pretty sad shape right now, but like Leander Paes, at least he can still play mixed….

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Grandin/Polasek def. (6) Groenefeld/Tecau 1-6 6-0 10-7

Mixed rankings said that Groenefeld/Tecau should have been unseeded — although, with a scoreline like that, it’s hard to know who “should” have been anything in this match….

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Black/Qureshi def. Hsieh/Nielsen 6-4 6-0

Mixed rankings would have left Black/Qureshi just short of a seed; little wonder they did well.

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Hradecka/Cermak def. Hantuchova/Rojer 7-6(7-5) 6-2

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Petrova/Cabal def. Rodionova/S Gonzalez 6-3 6-2

Not even a weak partner is slowing down Nadia Petrova so far. Makes you wonder what happened to her in singles that she lost so early.

Roland Garros Rankings Update: Men

Novak Djokovic, as you may have heard, lost his childhood coach over the weekend — an event which broke him up pretty badly. The only good news is, if he needs time off, this would be a great time to take it. His position at #1 is absolutely unassailable.

#2 Andy Murray — now, he is vulnerable to losing his spot. It won’t be easy; Roger Federer needs a final. But if Federer can make the final, then he will again be #2. Until Wimbledon, anyway.

On the other hand, Federer could still slip to #4. And, no, it isn’t Rafael Nadal who threatens him; it’s David Ferrer. Ferrer needs a title, but it could happen.

Ferrer is in a very nice position: The only place he can go is up. A title, as mentioned, would take him to #3. But even if he loses his next match, he will rise from #5 to #4 unless Rafael Nadal can defend the Roland Garros title. And even if Nadal does defend Roland Garros, Ferrer will be #4 if he can reach the final.

The good news for Nadal is, he is pretty sure to stay #5 at least. With Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin del Potro out, the only player who could still threaten him is Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. And even he needs a title.

Djokovic, Murray, Federer, Ferrer, Nadal, Berdych, del Potro, and Tsonga are sure to be Top Ten. Richard Gasquet hasn’t clinched a Top Ten spot, but it’s extremely likely. That leaves one spot, currently belonging to Stanislas Wawrinka. He still has the inside track, but Kei Nishikori or Tommy Haas could take it from him with a semifinal.

Those twelve, plus Marin Cilic, Janko Tipsarevic, Milos Raonic, Nicolas Almagro, Gilles Simon, and Philipp Kohlschreiber look safe in the Top Twenty. Sam Querrey is in pretty good shape, too, although not yet mathematically clinched. Juan Monaco could be passed by Tommy Robredo or Mikhail Youzhny. If he is, he would be the only player to fall out of the Top Twenty this week.

Entering Sunday’s action, we had only one new name in the Top Thirty: Tommy Robredo, replacing Florian Mayer. Mikhail Youzhny could also make it in; he would replace Fabio Fognini

The doubles is even more open-and-shut than the singles. The Bryans are #1 by such a wide margin that one of them could give up all his points, and they could divide the other brother’s total between them and still be #1. We can’t remember the last time a team was this dominant. Marc Lopez looks pretty safe in the Top Five, and Marcel Granollers has a pretty good shot also; it’s not clear who will have the last spot (Robert Lindstedt, #3 coming in, is down to #5 and risks going lower). Out of the Top Ten — indeed, out of the Top Twenty — is last year’s champion Daniel Nestor; his ex-partner Max Mirnyi has also fallen well below #20. Odds are that either Rohan Bopanna or Bruno Soares will take Nestor’s place in the Top Ten. Other Top Ten players (in addition to the Bryans, Lopez, Granollers, and Lindstedt) are Mahesh Bhupathi, Horia Tecau, and four of the five Bopanna, Qureshi, Rojer, and Soares; Peya is also a significant threat.
