Roland Garros

Singles – Third Round: (1) N Djokovic def. (26) G Dimitrov 6-2 6-2 6-3

Some rematch that was — Novak Djokovic had to have the trainer out to work on his neck, and it still didn’t matter. Grigor Dimitrov is likely to stay at #28 — right where he came in. Novak Djokovic is sure to stay at #1 — which is also, of course, right where he came in.

Singles – Third Round: (3) R Nadal def. (27) F Fognini 7-6(7-5) 6-4 6-4

Once again Rafael Nadal struggled; the first set of this could have gone either way (there were four breaks). But once Nadal was into it… you know the drill. Fabio Fognini will stay right around the #29 ranking he came in with.

Singles – Third Round: (7) R Gasquet def. N Davydenko 6-4 6-4 6-3

Nikolay Davydenko remains stuck below #40 — and may have a hard time going higher, considering that he is skipping Wimbledon. True, he rarely does well there, but it means he loses even the 10 free points for showing up….

Singles – Third Round: (29) M Youzhny def. (8) J Tipsarevic 6-4 6-4 6-3

This was an interesting contest: Mikhail Youzhny, who rarely wins at big events, against Janko Tipsarevic, who is a complete mess. Evidently being a mess is worse than being a nut case…. And Tipsarevic made the fourth round last year, so he will lose at least one more ranking spot. At the rate things are going, he won’t be Top Fifteen much longer.

Singles – Third Round: (9) S Wawrinka def. (21) J Janowicz 6-3 6-7(2-7) 6-3 6-3

This contest took place as John Isner and Tommy Haas were doing their best to play an infinite match on another court, and as Jelena Jankovic and Samantha Stosur were both doing their best to lose. So the stands may not have been as full as they should have been. But it’s a big win for Stanislas Wawrinka; it moves him past Marin Cilic, meaning that he will very likely keep the Top Ten ranking he came in with. Jerzy Janowicz remains a little below the Top Twenty.

Singles – Third Round: (12) T Haas def. (19) J Isner 7-5 7-6(7-4) 4-6 6-7(10-12) 10-8

John Isner probably should have lost this in the fourth set; he really struggled to get to the tiebreak. But having lost both that game and the tiebreak, Tommy Haas had a real letdown and gave Isner a break early in the fifth set. Only to see the American lose it. Isner had a break chance — match chance — in the tenth game of the fifth set, and flubbed it. Haas earned the decisive break in game 17, and Isner lost his chance for back-to-back five set wins. Isner falls just short of the Top Twenty (in more ways than one); Haas will likely rise to #13.

Singles – Third Round: (13) K Nishikori def. (24) B Paire 6-3 6-7(3-7) 6-4 6-1

Benoit Paire was warned for coaching in this match — perhaps the most interesting moment in what was a surprisingly easy win for Kei Nishikori. Paire had already had a warning, and he was called for the coaching thing at set point against Nishikori. He managed to win the second set, but little wonder if he had trouble after that. Nishikori might be able to hit the Top Ten if he wins his next match; Paire will have to settle for #25 or #26.

Singles – Third Round: (16) P Kohlschreiber def. V. Hanescu 6-0 7-6(7-0) 6-1

Philipp Kohlschreiber went down an early break in the second set, but that was his only stumble in what was otherwise a pretty overwhelming match. He will likely rise to #18 (although he needs a semifinal to go higher than that); Victor Hanescu can at least console himself with a Top Fifty spot.

Doubles – First Round: (13) Benneteau/Zimonjic def. Andujar/Robredo 4-6 6-3 6-3

This might be enough to keep Nenad Zimonjic Top Twenty, but our guess is that he’ll need one more win.

Doubles – First Round: Seppi/Troicki def. Mathieu/Pouille 6-2 6-9

Doubles – Second Round: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Butorac/Soares 7-5 7-6(7-2)

The Bryans continue their relentless march toward the year-end #1. We have no idea if anyone has kept a record for “largest span between when the first team qualifies for the year-end championships and when the second team qualifies,” but the Bryans seem to be trying to set it.

Doubles – Second Round: Llodra/Mahut def. (5) Mirnyi/Tecau 4-6 7-6(7-3) 7-5

Once again Mirnyi/Tecau look like a team that needs some re-tooling. And Max Mirnyi was last year’s champion. That was forty-odd percent of his points. He’s going to fall like a rock. And, at the rate he’s going, he can probably forget about the year-end championships.

Doubles – Second Round: (6) Qureshi/Rojer def. Bedene/Zemlja 7-5 6-1

Qureshi/Rojer need two more wins to defend their points, but their chances of staying Top Ten now look pretty good. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) Bryan………….11310

1..(1) Bryan………….11310

3..(4) Lopez…………..5270

4..(5) Granollers………5270

5..(3) Lindstedt……….5260

6..(6) Bhupathi………..4920

7..(7) Tecau…………..4890

8.(11) Bopanna…………4715

9..(9) Qureshi…………4310

10.(10) Rojer…………..4310

Doubles – Second Round: (8) Marrero/Verdasco def. Cermak/Mertinak 7-6(7-5) 6-3

With this, David Marrero’s Top Twenty spot appears pretty secure.

Doubles – Second Round: Cuevas/Zeballos def. (9) Melzer/Paes 5-7 6-4 7-6(8-6)

Pablo Cuevas continues his fine comeback — and Leander Paes continues his decline. No chance for a return to the Top Ten now; he might lose his Top Fifteen spot.

Doubles – Second Round: F Lopez/Sa def. Marx/Mergea 6-2 3-6 7-6(7-5)

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (3) Srebotnik/Zimonjic def. Garcia/Gicquel 6-2 7-5

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (5) Mladenovic/Nestor def. Spears/Lipsky 6-2 6-4

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (6) Groenefeld/Tecau def. Coin/Mahut 6-3 1-6 10-5

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Rodionova/Gonzalez def. (7) Dellacqua/Bhupathi 6-4 1-6 11-9

Not sure what this says about Mixed rankings. Mixed would have promoted Dellacqua/Bhupathi slightly, to the #6 seeds — but Rodionova/Gonzalez were the #9 team in Mixed, which is higher than they would be in the actual draw.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Hradecka/Cermak def. Barty/Bopanna 6-4 6-4

Mixed rankings would have made Hradecka/Cermak #4, so this was to be expected.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Grandin/Polasek def. Flipkens/Fleming 6-4 7-5

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Lim/Chardy def. Watson/Marray 6-4 6-7(8-10) 14-12

Watson/Marray had the chance to serve this out in the match tiebreak, and failed. More signs that Heather Watson needs some matches to get back into form….

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Hsieh/Nielsen def. Cirstea/Marrero 7-6(7-5) 6-4
