The French Open may not be able to easily expand its crowded grounds due to bureaucratic and legal snags, but the clay-court Grand Slam is leading the way in the television technology arms race.
The latest shot in the technology war will be fired with the demonstration launch of next-generation “Ultra High Definition” television format during this edition at Roland Garros.
The new 4K format is said to deliver four times the clarity to current Hi-Def, which also made its debut at the Open just seven years ago.
Fans on the grounds will be able to see the new format on display during the second week of the tennis fortnight, the result of a multi-camera set-up of the new technology on the Chatrier show court.
The output will be visible in a showroom of France Télévisions, the RG LAB, located on the ground floor of the show court in the public area.
The project is a joint effort between organizer the French federation and France Télévisions.
