Roland Garros

Singles – First Round: (8) J Tipsarevic def. N Mahut 6-2 7-6(7-4) 6-1

After a truly miserable clay season, Janko Tipsarevic finally comes to life. But he needs two more wins to defend his points, three to return to the Top Ten. His Top Fifteen ranking is still in some slight danger.

Singles – First Round: B Paire def. M Baghdatis 3-6 7-6(7-1) 6-4 6-4

Marcos Baghdatis just can’t seem to solve clay. This may well cost him his Top Forty spot.

Singles – First Round: H Zeballos def. V Pospisil 7-6(11-9) 6-4 6-7(4-7) 2-6 8-6

Horacio Zeballos has really been struggling lately; if this was a slump-breaker, he earned it! But he is still around #50 in safe points; he made the second round last year also, but that was as a qualifier.

Singles – First Round: L Kubot def. M Teixeira 6-4 5-7 7-6(9-7) 6-2

This was one of the matches that had been suspended the night before, but obviously the extra recovery time didn’t affect things much for Maxime Teixeira.

Singles – Second Round: (2) R Federer def. S Devvarman 6-2 6-1 6-1

Roger Federer’s gift draw continues to offer rewards. But he won’t face a real test for at least one more round; this doesn’t really say much about his form.

Singles – Second Round: (4) D Ferrer def. A Montanes 6-2 6-1 6-3

Pretty routine, but also a pretty big deal for David Ferrer: It means that Rafael Nadal now has to win the Roland Garros title to keep the #4 ranking. A final is no longer enough.

Singles – Second Round: (6) J Tsonga def. J Nieminen 7-6(8-6) 6-4 6-3

Early rounds on clay rarely bother Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. It’s the late ones that get to him…. He leaves Jarkko Nieminen still below #35.

Singles – Second Round: (10) M Cilic def. N Kyrgios 6-4 6-2 6-2

Marin Cilic defends his points, and now has the inside track in the contest for the #10 ranking. Although a lot will probably depend on Stanislas Wawrinka’s health. The good news (at least if you’re Swiss) is, Wawrinka said he was pain-free in his first round.

Singles – Second Round: (11) N Almagro def. E Roger-Vasselin 6-2 6-4 6-3

Nicolas Almagro is defending quarterfinalist points, so he still needs one more win just to stay Top Fifteen.

Singles – Second Round: (14) M Raonic def. M Llodra 7-5 3-6 7-6(7-3) 6-2

Milos Raonic defends his points, keeping him in the middle of a many-sided fight for a Top Fifteen spot. Michael Llodra will stay a little below #50.

Singles – Second Round: (15) G Simon def. P Cuevas 6-7(2-7) 6-1 6-1 6-1

Despite the scoreline, an impressive return to action for Pablo Cuevas. Although it’s sad he won’t get more time on clay as he tries to get his game back.

Singles – Second Round: (18) S Querrey def. J Hajek 6-4 7-5 6-4

This is the best Roland Garros result of Sam Querrey’s career, and it effectively guarantees that he will stay Top Twenty — in all likelihood he will rise.

Singles – Second Round: (20) A Seppi def. B Kavcic 6-0 7-6(7-3) 6-7(2-7) 4-6 6-3

Andreas Seppi still hasn’t clinched his Top 25 spot, although his chances are getting better. One more win would surely do it.

Singles – Second Round: (23) K Anderson def. E Donskoy 6-7(8-10) 6-1 7-5 6-2

Kevin Anderson continues to look good on clay — but he made the third round last year also, so he needs more to clinch his Top 25 spot.

Singles – Second Round: (25) J Chardy def. R Bautista Agut 6-1 7-5 6-4

This guarantees us a Frenchman in the fourth round, since Jeremy Chardy faces Tsonga next.

Singles – Second Round: (30) J Benneteau def. T Kamke 7-6(11-9) 7-5 5-7 0-6 6-4

Julien Benneteau defends his points, but we wouldn’t want to bet much on him making the Top Thirty; he faces Roger Federer next, and it’s clear which one will be more rested….

Singles – Second Round: (32) T Robredo def. I Sijsling 6-7(2-7) 4-6 6-3 6-1 6-1

Tommy Robredo is now only about a hundred points away from the Top Thirty, and he faces an unseeded opponent next. Too bad the clay season is almost over…. He leaves Igor Sijsling around #60.

Singles – Second Round: F Lopez def. J Sousa 3-6 6-3 6-4 6-4

Everything he does here is a bonus for Feliciano Lopez. This should put him back in the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: G Monfils def. E Gulbis 6-7(5-7) 6-4 7-6(7-4) 6-2

With a final last week and now this, Gael Monfils is clearly in close to top form again. He leaves Ernests Gulbis just above #40.

Singles – Second Round: V Troicki def. D Gimeno-Traver 4-6 7-6(7-4) 6-0 6-7(7-9) 6-4

Viktor Troicki really does seem to have found himself again. Finally. He needs one more win to return to the Top Fifty, however.

Doubles – First Round: (2) Granollers/M Lopez def. Levinsky/Lu 4-2, retired

Given the way Granollers/Lopez have struggled lately, they could use some cheap points. They weren’t defending anything, so this is a slight rankings boost, but it will likely be days before we know who will be #3. (The Bryans of course will be #1.) We currently show the Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) Bryan………….11220

1..(1) Bryan………….11220

3..(4) Lopez…………..5270

4..(5) Granollers………5270

5..(3) Lindstedt……….5260

6..(6) Bhupathi………..4920

7..(7) Tecau…………..4890

8.(11) Bopanna…………4715

9.(13) Soares………….4280

10.(15) Paes……………4180

Doubles – First Round: (3) Lindstedt/Nestor def. Stakhovsky/Youzhny 7-6(10-8) 7-6(7-4)

This was rather a scary start for Lindstedt/Nestor — Daniel Nestor was last year’s champion, so he needs a lot more than this just to stay Top Twenty.

Doubles – First Round: (5) Mirnyi/Tecau def. Mannarino/Paire 6-0 7-6(7-3)

Horia Tecau defends his points. Max Mirnyi, who has an even bigger fraction of his total on the line than his ex-partner Nestor, still has a long way to go….

Doubles – First Round: (8) Marrero/Verdasco def. Brunstrom/Klaasen 6-3 6-2

One more win would just about assure David Marrero’s Top Twenty spot, with Fernando Verdasco not too far behind.

Doubles – First Round: Elgin/Istomin def. (11) S Gonzalez/Lipsky 1-6 6-3 6-4

Doubles – First Round: (12) Dodig/Melo def. Hanescu/Muller 6-7(4-7) 6-4 6-1

Doubles – First Round: Murray/Peers def. (15) Knowle/Polasek 7-6(7-5) 7-6(7-5)

Doubles – First Round: Begemann/Emmrich def. Garcia-Lopez/Ramos 6-3 4-6 6-3

The Dusseldorf champions show they can win even in non-German-speaking countries. This is becoming the best run of their careers.

Doubles – First Round: Butorac/Sock def. Klizan/Zelenay 6-4 6-4

Quite a French Open for Jack Sock, with wins in both singles and doubles.

Doubles – First Round: Dasnieres de Veigy/Serra def. Matosevic/Smith 7-6(7-4) 7-6(8-6)

Doubles – First Round: Lorenzi/Starace def. Ratiwatana/Ratiwatana 6-4 6-1

This Week’s Movers — Men

Each week, Daily Tennis will look at the biggest movers of the week, looking at how they did what they did.

Biggest Upward Mover — Most Places Moved (Top 100)

Leader: Albert Montanes — Moved 35 places, from #82 to #47.

Montanes won Nice to show that, yes, he did still have it. At least on clay.

Runner-Up: Gael Monfils — Moved 28 places, from #109 to #81

Monfils lost that Nice final to Montanes.

Biggest Percentage Mover — Cut Ranking By Highest Percent (Top 100)

Leader: Montanes, cut ranking 43%

Runner-Up: Monfils, 36%

Biggest Loser — Most Places Lost (Top 100)

Loser: Brian Baker — Dropped 36 places, from #73 to #109

Baker can’t play. He’s going to fall more….

Biggest Percentage Loser — Worst Percentage Increase in Ranking (Top 100)

Loser: Baker, ranking increased 49%.

Ranking Notes

Nice was responsible for most of our movement this week; Montanes and Monfils were the only players to gain as much as 20%, and they both played there. But Dusseldorf semifinalist Guido Pella was third; he rose 18%, to #83. Nice semifinalist Pablo Andujar was fourth; he gained 15%, to #45. No one else gained as much as 14%.

Only three players fell as much as 20%: Baker lost 49%, Viktor Troicki fell 30% (to #57), and Janko Tipsarevic lost 20% (to #12). Interesting that the latter two both played the Team Cup last year; their losses were, in a sense, linked.

Our Personal Picks for “Best Mover of the Week”

These are subjective picks!

Obviously Montanes; he had the biggest move and he won a title.
