Roland Garros former finalist, Samantha Stosur squeezed in an opening victory before rain wrecked the afternoon program, with the ninth seed defeating Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-0, 6-2.

Australia’s Stosur, who lost the final three years ago to Italian Francesca Schiavone, said she was not overly bothered by wet conditions at one of the most dismal recent editions in Paris. The 42-year-old Date-Krumm lost the first nine games in the rout.

“When I was playing, it was actually not too bad. It was spitting a little bit when we went out there. Lucky for me I was able to finish the match before this last downpour came. I guess that’s the best way to deal with sometimes a frustrating situation.”

French 13th seed Marion Bartoli gave home fans a thrill, saving two match points and struggling to beat Olga Govortsova 7-6(8), 4-6, 7-5. The rain-interrupted epic lasted more than three hours, with Bartoli breaking seven times.

“It was a very lengthy, tricky day. I started at 11 am and then again at 2 pm and we finished at 6 pm so it was a very long match. The rain interruption I think was to my disadvantage, because I think I was dominating a little bit initially physically at least,” said the winner.

Slovak 16th seed Dominika Cibulkova crushed Lesia Tsurenko 6-1, 6-4 while Kazakh Yaroslava Shvedova dismissed American Coco Vandeweghe 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 and Kristina Mladenovic beat Lauren Davis of the US 6-0, 7-5.

Kiwi Marina Erakovic handed Britain a loss as she beat Elena Baltacha 6-3, 6-0. Former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic started with a win over Daniela Hantuchova 6-4, 7-6(7).
