With the French Open up and running, Roger Federer has already moved closer to another record as he competes in his 54th consecutive major. The 31-year-old is enjoying an nearly unparalleled run of consistency stretching back to January, 2000, at the Australian Open. It’s the most of any current player.
Two more appearances, in Wimbledon and the US Open this season, and he ties the record of 56 set by South African Wayne Ferreira from 1991-2004. “I’ve never been really close to ever missing one, I’ve never pulled out of any live match,” said Federer, still hunting for his first title since last August. “I’ve only pulled out of two tournaments in my career.
“For me, it’s just something I just kept on doing. I never thought I was going to play that many, have that many opportunities to do well at the slams.
“In a Slam where you know you’re going to enter best-of-five-set matches over two, three weeks, you have to be at your best and you need to feel like you can compete with the best at the highest of levels for a long period of time.”
