Roland Garros

Singles – First Round: (2) R Federer def. P Carreno-Busta 6-2 6-2 6-3

A pretty dominating start for Roger Federer — it took only an hour and twenty minutes. And Federer won every break chance he had (seven in all), and 52% of the points even on Pablo Carreno-Busta’s serve. Keep that up and he could well do some real damage here….

Singles – First Round: (4) D Ferrer def. M Matosevic 6-4 6-3 6-4

On the other hand, it’s still theoretically possible for David Ferrer to pass Federer in the next two weeks. Especially since they’re in the same half.

Singles – First Round: (14) M Raonic def. X Malisse 6-2 6-1 4-6 6-4

Xavier Malisse’s weapons match well against Milos Raonic’s (as the last two sets show), but he doesn’t like clay, and he doesn’t seem to have the endurance he once had. He will remain below the Top Fifty.

Singles – First Round: (15) G Simon def. L Hewitt 3-6 1-6 6-4 6-1 7-5

Mark this down as the first five-set match of the tournament, and obviously the first comeback from two sets down. Still, if Lleyton Hewitt can do this well against a Frenchman on clay, things look fairly promising for the grass season.

Singles – First Round: (18) S Querrey def. L Lacko 6-3 6-4 6-4

When two big strong clay-haters face off, it makes sense that the bigger, stronger, better clay-hater will win. Sam Querrey is already adding points — it is only the second time he has made the second round here — making it likely that he will stay Top Twenty.

Singles – First Round: (20) A Seppi def. L Mayer 6-7(4-7) 6-4 6-3 6-7(2-7) 6-4

Whew! Andreas Seppi suffered our second five-setter, and he still needs two more wins to defend his points. Although he is currently #24 in safe points, he probably needs at least one more to stay Top 25.

Singles – First Round: (23) K Anderson def. I Marchenko 6-3 7-5 6-4

Kevin Anderson continues to play very well on clay this year. He needs one more win to defend his points, however.

Singles – First Round: (25) J Chardy def. B Becker 6-4 6-2 7-5

Not much of a surprise, given how little Benjamin Becker likes clay. Jeremy Chardy has defended his points, so he will almost certainly stay Top Thirty.

Singles – First Round: B Kavcic def. J Duckworth 6-2 6-2 6-2

Considering the surface, it was somewhat impressive that James Duckworth made it this far.

Singles – First Round: J Hajek def. D Kudla 6-2 5-7 6-0 6-4

Even taking a set on clay is perhaps slightly promising for Denis Kudla. Note that we said “slightly.”

Singles – First Round: J Sousa def. G Soeda 6-1 6-3 6-2

Go Soeda was in a slump, and clay certainly wasn’t helping him. He remains below #100. But at least he’ll get to play on more congenial surfaces after this.

Singles – First Round: M Llodra def. S Darcis 6-4 4-6 6-1 6-4

Michael Llodra isn’t a big fan of clay, so this is a fairly good win for him. One more win would put him in the vicinity of (although still below) #50.

Singles – First Round: R Bautista Agut def. G Muller 6-3 6-4 6-2

Probably the only thing we need to say about this is that Gilles Muller had eight aces. No way he’s going to win on any surface with an ace total that low….

Singles – First Round: S Devvarman def. D Munoz-de la Nava 6-3 6-3 7-5

This is pretty shocking. Yes, Somdev Devvarman is probably a better player than Daniel Munoz-de la Nava — but this is clay!

Singles – First Round: V Troicki def. J Blake 6-4 6-2 6-2

Apparently all Viktor Troicki needed to get his game back was to have his ranking fall out of the Top Fifty. This won’t put him back — he has merely defended his points — but he seems to be playing a lot better than a few months ago.
