Brussels

Singles – Semifinal: (8) Peng Shuai def. Romina Oprandi 6-4 2-6 6-4

Despite the seedings, this feels like a bit of a surprise. Peng Shuai came in ranked 11 places higher, but Romina Oprandi is the clay expert…. Oprandi it appears will be #36.

Singles – Semifinal: Kaia Kanepi def. Jamie Hampton 7-6(8-6) 6-4

This, on the other hand, was no surprise at all. Kaia Kanepi could almost be labelled “Miss May,” she does so well in this month. This put her above #35, with the final still to play — but with big Roland Garros points still to defend.

Singles – Final: Kaia Kanepi def. (8) Peng Shuai 6-3 7-5

Truly it does not do to bet against Kaia Kanepi in May…. This didn’t take much more than an hour, and Kanepi was in control pretty much the whole time, although she really struggled the first time she served for the match. It’s the fourth title of her career, and the second Premier, following Sydney 2012. She definitely looks like one of the top unseeded threats at Roland Garros. And her ranking will be zooming — we show her rising from #40 to #26, although she could lose all that ground next week.

Peng Shuai would have been close to the Top Twenty had she won this. As it is, we show her at #24. And still looking for her first WTA title….

Doubles – Final: (2) Groenefeld/Peschke def. Dabrowski/Peer 6-0 6-3

Nice to see that some sanity still exists on the WTA Tour. It’s good, too, to see Kveta Peschke perhaps finally getting things in order. Obviously she wanted to have things right by Roland Garros! She picks up her first title since Linz 2012, and her first Premier win since Sydney 2012, back when she was still playing with Katarina Srebotnik. It is also the first title for Anna-Lena Groenefeld since Linz.

Strasbourg

Singles – Final: (3) Alize Cornet def. Lucie Hradecka 7-6(7-4) 6-0

Alize Cornet seems to like cycling through the year backwards. Her first title, Budapest 2008, was in July. Her second, Bad Gastein 2012, was in June. Now she has one in May. All clay events, all International tier, but it’s three titles.

Three titles, but not much movement, since she was defending 200 points. #31 coming in, she has put herself in the Top Thirty, but remains below the Top 25. Still, she’ll go to Paris with a nice head of steam.

Lucie Hradecka broke down at the end, but at least she is back in the Top Hundred.

Doubles – Final: (4) Date-Krumm/Scheepers def. (3) Black/Erakovic 6-4 3-6 14-12

Talk about a veteran final — with the more veteran team proving just a little better. This is now the third doubles title for Kimiko Date-Krumm this year, following Pattaya City (with Dellacqua) and Monterrey (with Babos). Her singles is falling off, but her doubles results are the best of her career! Cara Black is doing pretty well, too; this is her third final of the year, although she won only one of them. Who needs youngsters when you have veterans like that?
