Roger Federer has never been a man to show much compassion for Andy Murray but the Swiss, who will take over the no.2 seeding spot in the French Open, believes the timing rather than the nature of the injury that has prompted the Scot to miss the year’s second Grand Slam is a major concern.
Federer has always been viewed as being extremely fortunate with the avoidance of injury and the upcoming event at Roland Garros will mark his 57th consecutive major.
However he concedes combating injury is part of top line sport and admits there are many times he’s played in a degree of pain. For this back injury to occur for Murray in the preliminary to the French Open and then Wimbledon is bad timing.
Federer said: “The back comes and goes as we know. Clearly only he knows what he has, how much pain he feels. But those are normal tennis injuries to have, those wear and tear, niggling injuries.
“The only problem is if you play too long with something that hurts it’s just not so much fun anymore. What you don’t want to happen is to get injured in this phase right now – right before the French, leading into Wimbledon.
Murray, like Federer, has a trusted team of physical experts constantly on call and his condition is monitored on a daily basis. “I think that is what happened when he injured his wrist six years or so ago, something happened in Hamburg and he missed the whole tour,” recalled Federer.
“It’s part of the game, it’s what we do, we play with pain very often.
“He is one of the fittest guys out there and I am sure he is going to be ready.”
