Pablo Andujar really does seem to be on fire. He will certainly be Top Fifty after this. Gilles Simon was going to be #17 no matter what.

An ugly ending for Sam Querrey, who loses what should have been a big chance to rise above #20.

Albert Montanes suddenly looks like a potential finalist, since he faces Roger-Vasselin next.
Singles – Quarterfinal:(WC) G Monfils def. R Haase 6-2 6-3
Gael Monfils, though, looks like a potential champion. He isn’t the highest-ranked player left (that’s Andujar), but he’s certainly the best.

Sad for Tommy Haas with Roland Garros so close. But he needed a title to budge his ranking, and maybe he didn’t want to play that many matches anyway. Jarko Nieminen is now assured a Top Forty spot.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) (WC) J Monaco def. T Kamke 6-3 6-4
Juan Monaco came in tied with Philipp Kohlschreiber for the #18/#19 ranking. If he wins his next match, he’ll break that tie and move to #18. And he is the clear favorite in the semifinal.

Viktor Troicki’s struggles are really starting to hit home now. He will fall out of the Top Fifty.

Doing It Their Way
What if Roland Garros seeded the Wimbledon way?
That is, what if the French Open used a seeding formula to adjust for clay, the way Wimbledon adjusts for grass?
There is nothing complex about the concept. We decided to do it. There is more clay than grass, of course, so we modified the Wimbledon system a little. Instead of counting results from two years, we counted part of one: In this system, we take a player’s current ranking total, and add his Roland Garros 2012 points again, plus his clay points from the week after Miami through Rome.
We took the Top 35 players (the 32 potential seeds, several of whom have already withdrawn, plus a few alternates) and ranked them this way. The result is as follows (we show the player’s revised seed, the ATP ranking on which his actual seed is based, his name, his adjusted points, and his move if any):

Novak Djokovic’s lead is too large to overcome. But note that Rafael Nadal rises all the way to #2. Andy Murray slides to #4, just behind Roger Federer — although, with Murray out, this becomes moot. Interestingly, we have exactly the same order from #5 to #8.
Below that, almost everyone moves. But only a few moves actually matter. Nicolas Almagro rises from the #13-#16 block into the #9-#12 block, dumping Marin Cilic from #12 to #13. Benoit Paire’s Rome heroics would have moved him from the #25-#32 block; Fabio Fognini and Kevin Anderson also rise into this block. Falling out are Sam Querrey, Jerzy Janowicz, and Alexandr Dolgopolov.
The above, of course, assumes that everyone plays, which they won’t. With Murray and Del Potro out, for instance, the revised seedings would put Wawrinka instead of Tipsarevic .in the top eight seeds. And there are similar changes lower down.
The changes at the bottom probably aren’t worth bothering with. But that move by Nadal is, at the least, interesting.
