Argentine Juan Del Potro joined Andy Murray as a French Open absentee with the South American number seven withdrawing after suffering with a virus for several weeks. But there is good news for Madrid finalist Stanislas Wawrinka, who has received the medical OK to play in Paris after getting treatment on a right thigh injury which forced him to with draw before a Rome second-round match last week.
Del Potro’s decision came after Murray had pulled out with back problems which forced him to quit a match last week in Rome, leaving the Scot to miss only his second major since 2007 when he also skipped Paris with a wrist problem.
Argentine media reported that Del Potro would not play Paris after reaching the 2012 quarter-finals. The Argentine exited the Masters 1000 in the third round to Benoit Paire.
Del Potro returned home to Tandil hoping to be fit for Paris. “I’m sad to miss such an important tournament, obviously it’s a blow because I’ve always dreamed of winning the French,” Del Potro said. “But I need to make a full recovery and be able to prepare 100 percent for my next events.”
Del Potro is hoping to return in just over a fortnight for the grass court season which begins at Queen’s club, London.
