Muscle Tear May Force Stanislas Wawrinka Out of Paris

With potential second seed Andy Murray already ruled out of the French Open, world no.11 Stanislas Wawrinka could be another high profile absentee with the Swiss currently suffering from a small muscle tear in his right thigh.

Wawrinka, flourishing under the new coaching regime of former French Open runner Magnus Norman, showed that he possessed the potential to be a title contender at Roland Garros by playing some excellent tennis to reach the final of the Mutua Madrid Open, beating top tenners such as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Tomas Berdych before losing to Rafael Nadal.

However his campaign at the Caja Magica took its toll and he was forced to withdraw from last week’s Internazionale BNL d’Italia before even taking the court against to Alexandr Dolgopolov at the Foro Italico.

According to the Swiss newspaper Le Matin Wawrinka hasn’t touched his racquet for more than a week and the 28 year-old admitted: “My situation is not easy to live with.”

If Wawrinka was forced to withdraw from Roland Garros, where he has reached the last 16 three years in a row, it would be a hard blow as in the past month, he has beaten Andy Murray at Monte Carlo, David Ferrer, to win the Portugal Open title in Osteria and his two notable victories over in Madrid.

“I am preoccupied with therapy,” he said. “I have not done anything else since I got injured. I’ll know more precisely where I am later today when I see my doctor and get some tests. The injury is getting better and I am hoping two days of training would be sufficient.”

Wawrinka has been one of the consistent performers of Grand Slam tennis and has not missed an event since making his debut at the 2005 French Open, a run of 32 major events.
