Slovenians advanced into the second round at the with comeback victories as Russian eighth seed Nikolay Davydenko was a high-profile victim at the French Open tune-up event. The 31-year-old, playing for his sixth week in a row, has now lost his last four matches heading into the weekend kickoff at Roland Garros. Davydenko, now ranked 46th after once standing third, ended his loss with 33 unforced errors as Bednene fought back after dropping the first set. “I may be a lucky loser but I deserved this win,” said Bedene. “In the middle of the second set I started playing better. I felt the chance to win – and I took it. My serving saved me many times, I’m very happy with my entire performance.”
Fellow Slovene Zemla, a Casablanca clay quarter-finalist last month, played what he called “strange” match against Goffin to finally advance as he allowed Goffin only one winning service game from his last seven. The winner ended with 11 aces and overcame 31 unforced errors.
