Eagle Is Prepared To Coach Tomic In Paris

The work of Australian coach Josh Eagle came to a quick end in the south of France as both of his temporary clients, Lleyton Hewitt and Marinko Matsosevic, lost in the opening round at Nice, one of the final ATP tune-ups prior to Sunday’s start at the French Open.

But the real work is likely only beginning for Eagle, who has been called into the breach to help out wayward Aussie Bernard Tomic after the player’s father was banned from ATP events as well as the French Open for a bloody attack on a member of the team entourage a fortnight ago in Madrid.

The Tomic assault trial was postponed until the autumn by a Madrid court.

Despite John Tomic brashly predicting that his 59th-ranked son would not play Roland Garros if he – the father-coach – was not on hard, reports indicate that Tomic is due to show up in Paris with Eagle doing the coaching.

“I don’t really expect to see him until Paris but I certainly expect him to play in Paris,” Eagle told the Australian AP. “It’s grand slam tennis. Bernie would be jumping out of his skin to play any grand slam tournament regardless of what’s happened. I think he’ll be ready to go next week.”

Tomic would go to Paris with limited clay experience, having played four matches and lost three over the past month in Europe. The 20-year-old has one career Paris win, from 2012.
