Lleyton Hewitt will head to the French Open without a European clay match win after the former No.1 exited to Spain’s Pablo Andujar 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 as the surprise Madrid semi-finalist dominated the Aussie. Over-30 Hewitt has never done well on clay and cannot expect to start at this late stage in his career. He was joined on the sidelines on the French Mediterranean coast by compatriot Marinko Matosevic, who lost to Dutchman Robin Hasse 6-1, 6-4.
Taiwan’s Yen-hsun Lu notched an upset by knocking out Italian fifth seed Andreas Seppi 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 while Argentine Carlos Berlocq beat compatriot Leo Mayer with the loss of just three games.

Jarkko Nieminen began putting the final polish on his French Open form with an opening win over Lukas Lacko 6-3, 6-1. The start was delayed for two hours by morning rain but that did not bother the veteran Finn, seeded sixth and playing in the northern German city for the first time.
Nieminen, ranked 42nd, had exited to Ernests Gulbis over two consecutive weeks in Munich and Rome and was glad to put that dismal series behind him. “I have a lot of confidence from Monte Carlo,” said the Finn who reached the last eight in the principality with wins over Milos Raonic and Juan Del Potro last month. “The courts and the clay there are similar to Paris. I haven’t done well at a Grand Slam – a 2008 quarter-final in Australia was his last solid result – and I’d love to carry this confidence and game to Paris.”
Nieminen took 76 minutes to get past Slovak Lacko, whom he beat in the Helsinki Challenger last November, with the winner breaking five times. “Today I played well in the heavy conditions. I don’t think they were the favorite of my opponent. You can’t expect to get any quick points, you have to work and build on every one.”
Lacko, ranked 74th, was playing in his first ATP-level match since a first-round loss in Miami two months ago to Ivan Dodig, a first-round Düsseldorf victim.
The final tune-up event prior to the Sunday start at Roland Garros features Serb Janko Tipsarevic in the top seeding position, ahead of Munich winner Tommy Haas.
Brazilian qualifier Andre Ghem, a 30-year-old ranked 260th, won the third ATP match of his career as he stopped Japan’s Go Soeda 6-4, 6-0. Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut beat Luxembourg veteran Gilles Muller 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, Tobias Kamke won a German battle with Benjamin Becker 6-3, 6-2 and Guido Pella of Argentina put out Lukas Kubot of Poland 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
