Rafael Nadal knows as much as any tennis player about injury setbacks. And with his own recent seven-month absence from the courts due to his chronic knee problems now becoming just a bad memory, the Spaniard has decided to try and close the door – for now – on constant chatter about his physical condition.

As it is, the 26-year-old has made a remarkable enough recovery, winning five titles from seven finals since returning to the game in February. He is bidding this week for his second clay Masters 1000 honor of the season in Rome, a city where he has already lifted seven trophies.

“I don’t want to talk any more about my pain and my knee in every press conference,” said the Spaniard with a sense of finality. “I have talked too much about that and now I want to talk about tennis.”

While Nadal appears to be healing, some of his elite colleagues are moving in the opposite direction, with Andy Murray now possibly out of the French Open with back pain and Novak Djokovic only just over an ankle injury which has bothered him for a month and a half.

Roger Federer is not out, but is still short of matches after taking seven weeks off this spring, while hardworking Spaniard David Ferrer has to be tapped out after playing nine matches = the majority of them three-setters, since late April on European clay.

Nadal takes no notice: “Nothing changes. I am still in the same place with fantastic players.

“Sometimes one loses and one wins and we are here competing with the top 50 players in the world on a Masters tour. (Madrid finalist now out of Rome with a thigh problem) Stan Wawrinka came with two finals (he won Portugal) he is probably tired,

“Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had a tough loss against Jerzy Janowicz and Murray gets injured and the calendar is tough. I wish him a fast recovery.”
