The Southern California Open in Carlsbad, CA, has a new tournament director in Octagon’s Alastair Garland, as last year’s tournament director, Steve Simon is too busy with BNP Paribas Open s expansion plans at Indian Wells. However, Simon’s staff from Indian Wells will still be working at the 2013 tournament in San Diego County.

Octagon leases the tournament from the WTA, which is currently without a title sponsor as Mercury Insurance s deal with the tournament lapsed at the end of 2012.

Organizers are confident they might be able to bring in a new one before the event kicks off at the La Costa Resort and Spa on July 27-August 4.

Victoria Azarenka and Agnieszka Radwanska, headline the WTA stop, which is part of the Emirates Airline US Open Series summer calendar.
