Madrid

Singles – Final: (5) R Nadal def. (15) S Wawrinka 6-2 6-4

The first set was hardly worth mentioning. The second was interesting. But, still, it was a relatively rested Rafael Nadal (who, on top of being Nadal, is Spanish, and this is Madrid) playing a tired, non-Spanish, nervous Stanislas Wawrinka.

With the win, Nadal now has five titles in seven events this year. He is 31-2. That compares with 23-3 for Djokovic, 22-4 for Murray, a mere 14-5 for Federer (who has yet to make it past a semifinal), 30-8 for Ferrer. Nadal remains at #5 for now — but he’ll be #4 if he can defend his Rome title.

The ATP notes that this is clay title #40 for Nadal, tying him with Thomas Muster for second on the all-time list. He might break Guillermo Vilas’s record of 46 as early as next year; it seems almost certain that he will break it eventually.

Stanislas Wawrinka still hasn’t won a big title, but he won ten matchs in a row coming into this event. We show him at #10. A Top 12 Roland Garros seed seems almost certain. And he likes clay a lot, so he has a good chance to do something with it.

Doubles – Final: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. (7) Peya/Soares 6-2 6-3

What is there to say? This is the fifth title this year for the Bryans, and the list includes the Australian Open, Indian Wells, and now Madrid. They will be going to the year-end Championships, and in practical terms, barring a major injury to one of them, they’ve all but clinched the year-end #1. Their lead over all the other teams is almost certainly too large to overcome — they now have 5555 points in the doubles Race. That’s more than twice the 2205 points held by the #2 team. What is interesting is that that #2 team is now Peya/Soares. We can hardly call them a threat to the Bryans — not when they’re 3000 points off the pace in the Race! — but at least they’re giving the doubles world a new look this year.

Rome

Singles – First Round: (9) R Gasquet def. S Querrey 6-2 7-6(8-6)

This made Richard Gasquet the first seed into the second round in Rome. He doesn’t really have any shot at the #8 Roland Garros seed, but maybe at Wimbledon…. Sam Querrey will probably stay Top Twenty, but it isn’t certain — there might be no Americans in the Top Twenty next week….

Singles – First Round: A Dolgopolov def. (WC) M Viola 6-4 6-3

This gets the footnote as the first main draw match of the tournament to complete. Hardly surprising, given the rankings gap here….

Singles – First Round: D Istomin def. J Isner 5-7 7-6(7-5) 6-3

Neither of these guys has the slightest liking for clay, so this is one of those “somebody has to lose” contests. John Isner actually won one more point in the match, but his timing wasn’t as good. We’d guess this means he won’t be Top Twenty next week.

Singles – First Round: K Anderson def. J Melzer 6-1 6-2

Kevin Anderson never liked clay much in the past, but he seems to have solved it this year. He may not earn a Top 24 Roland Garros seed, but he could be close. Unlike Jurgen Melzer; it appears he won’t be seeded at all.

Singles – First Round: G Dimitrov def. M Baghdatis 6-3 6-4

You can officially cross Marcos Baghdatis out of the hunt for a Roland Garros seed.

Singles – First Round: M Granollers def. N Davydenko 6-3 6-4

Nikolay Davydenko won’t be seeded in Paris either. Marcel Granollers remains in the hunt, but he remains borderline.
