Madrid
Singles – Quarterfinal: (6) T Berdych def. (3) A Murray 7-6(7-3) 6-4
There probably weren’t many people who expected Andy Murray to win here, but it’s going to be hard for him to ever get to #1 if he doesn’t learn to deal with clay one of these years. This took two hours, but Tomas Berdych was in charge for effectively the whole time. Murray will rise to #2, but he isn’t really gaining much ground on Novak Djokovic….
Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) R Nadal def. (4) D Ferrer 4-6 7-6(7-3) 6-0
Once again David Ferrer suffered a match to remember in his nightmares. He had leads in both the first and second sets, and let them slip — and although he got the lead back in the first, he obviously didn’t in the second, and the third was pure disaster. This even though Rafael Nadal was hot and bothered in the first set — the umpire actually enforced the time rule on him. Ferrer will stay #4 this week (although by the thinnest of margins if Nadal wins the title), but he now has to defend his points from Rome if he wants to be sure of the #4 Roland Garros seed.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (15) S Wawrinka def. (7) J Tsonga 6-2 6-7(9-11) 6-4
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had dealt pretty well with the clay so far — maybe the thin air of Madrid helped him, since it makes the courts faster. But, here, he faced someone who likes clay a lot. Tsonga will stay at #8; Stanislas Wawrinka is up to #13 — and he’s in the good half of the draw; he doesn’t have to face Nadal next.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (WC) P Andujar def. (14) K Nishikori 6-3 7-5
Roger Federer must really be kicking himself now. Kei Nishikori is in the Top Fifteen, but this is quite a big chance lost.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Haas/Stepanek 7-6(7-2) 6-3
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Marrero/Verdasco def. (5) Mirnyi/Tecau 6-2 7-6(7-3)
Marrero/Verdasco are looking as if they will be one of the stealth teams at Roland Garros….
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Chardy/Kubot def. (6) Bhupathi/Bopanna 6-2 6-4
Bhupathi/Bopanna looked good in the previous round, but this is frankly more typical of their recent results.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (7) Peya/Soares def. (3) Lindstedt/Nestor 6-4 6-2
This is truly becoming an amazing year for Peya/Soares. If they can keep up their clay results on other surfaces, a spot at the year-end championships seems sure.
