Top seeded holder Serena Williams shrugged off her months-long catfight with teenaged compatriot Sloane Stephens and got on with her tennis as she won into the third round 6-2, 7-5 over Spain’s Lourdes Dominguez Lino. “I feel it went well,” said the American. “I made a lot of errors, but her game kind of forces you to make errors. It was a really good clay court tennis match for me. It was perfect to play a match like this.”
Williams is representing the family this week in the Spanish capital after sister Venus withdrew citing back pain. The elder Williams has been passing her time with her tiny dog, which she walks in front of the sisters’ five-star hotel facing the Retiro park.
Second seed Maria Sharapova had to wait until nearly midnight as reported boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov took three hours to beat Novak Djokovic. But Sharapova made up for lost time as she crushed Christine McHale of the US, 6-1, 6-2.
Two-time Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova put out fellow Russian Nadia Petrova, the 11th seed, 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-4. French 14th seed Marion Bartoli, back with her father as coach after an unsuccessful trial of several other mentors in recent months, advanced over Maria Torro-Flor of Spain 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, but taking two and a quarter hours to get the job done.
Bartoli was also dealing with an ankle injury but managed to play through. “It was hurting me at the beginning of third set, but I was really able to focus and went throughout pain. I’m just really pleased with the way I felt on the court and the way I was able to pull that one out.
Serb 16th seed Ana Ivanovic out out South African Chanelle Scheepers 6-2, 6-2 while Germany’s Sabine Lisicki upset 15th seed Dominika Cibulkova 7-6(4), 7-6(3). Spain’s clay ace Anabel Medina Garrigues schooled American Madison Keys 7-6(2), 6-3.
