Despite his lack of match play due to lingering fears over his 2012 heart scare incidents, Mardy Fish has said he has no plans to retire from tennis. The 31-year-old told Sports Illustrated that he plans to carry on after skipping the clay season as he previously announced.
Fish, who once touched a top 10 ranking, says he is preparing the ground for his return on the Queen’s grass and is getting back into shape. And he definitely ruled out any quick retirement: “It’s not part of the discussion anymore,” he told the outlet. “Now I’m at a stage where I need to get on the court as much as I can and get into the most comfortable situation as I can.”
Fish confessed that he his lowest point when he had to withdraw before last year’s US Open fourth-round match with Roger Federer, when his worries over his treatment for an accelerated heartbreak were at their worst.
“We really saw what rock-bottom feels like and that was at the US Open last year. We’re getting it back and getting it under control and just getting my normal life back first and foremost and then we can worry about the tennis from there.”He appears enthused about resuming his career on the grass next month. “I’m feeling better and better,” he said. “It’s been a long process for sure. It’s been about eight, nine months since the US Open, dealing with some of the issues and confidence and getting into match shape and things like that.”
