Munich
Radek Stepanek won his first match since January surgery to relieve pressure on a nerve in his neck as the 34-year-old defeated 2010 winner Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Fifth seed Alexandr Dolgopolov began with a first-round win over Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4, 6-2 while No. 6 German Florian Mayer got past Lukas Kubot 7-6(2), 4-6, 7-5.
The poor form continued for Marcos Baghdatis as the one-time Australian Open finalist lost a fifth consecutive ATP match, going out to Russian Evgeny Korolov 7-5, 7-6(3). Ernests Gulbis stopped Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 6-2 while Grega Zemlja advanced over John Millman 6-2, 6-2.
Oeiras
A pair of Spaniards reached the second round on another unseasonably cold day while Barcelona quarter-finalist and eighth seed Tommy Robredo continued his injury comeback with a win. who missed half of 2012 with a leg injury, won from a set down as he beat Daniel Gimeno-Traver 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Spain’s Albert Ramos set up a showdown with Swiss second seed Stanislas Wawrinka after the No. 57, who lost a Barcelona quarter-final last week to Rafael Nadal after beating Japanese seed Kei Nishikori, defeated Argentine Carlos Berlocq 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3. Qualifier Pablo Carreno-Busta of Spain continued his run at the Estadio Nacional as he upset French fifth seed Julien Benneteau 6-3, 6-4 with five aces and four breaks of serve.
Ramos will take on Wawrinka for the fourth time and second this season while standing 0-3 in the series. Two of their three have been played on clay, including February in Buenos Aires.
Robin Haase provided disappointment on the day for Spain, defeating Pablo Andujar 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The country’s no. 1 David Ferrer takes the top seeding at the pre-French Open tune-up after replacing ailing Argentine Juan Martin del Potro in the lineup. Ferrer is short of match play after losing last week in his opening match in Barcelona after skipping Monte Carlo to rest a thigh injury.
Portugal’s Gastao Elias won his first match at the home event in five tries with a knockout of Argentine seventh seed Horacio Zeballos 6-3, 6-4. The NO. 113 is playing in his second ATP main draw of the season.
