World no.4 David Ferrer is never the most talkative of men when it comes to talking about his tennis but the Spaniard was ready to admit his failings after losing at the initial stage of the Barcelona Open Banco Sabadell.
Ferrer was the finalist to Rafael Nadal in last year’s competition at the Real Club de Tennis but not even the pride of currently being Spain’s top ranked player at the nation’s oldest tennis club could inspire him. After losing in three sets to Dmitry Tursunov he said afterwards: “It was the worst match that I’ve played in the last couple of years.”
Admittedly Ferrer was forced to miss last week’s Monte Carlo Rolex Masters because of an injured thigh he suffered in the Sony Open final defeat against Andy Murray in Miami. Blustery conditions did not aid quality tennis but after his 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 exit the 31 year-old Spaniard could only admit: “I couldn’t seem to hurt Tursunov with my shots. It was a strange match mentally and physically.”
Ferrer was making his 11th consecutive Barcelona appearance and is a four-time finalist at the event and he conceded: “It was a game to forget.
“I wasn’t good in tennis terms, mentally, or with my attitude. It affects me personally because my opportunities to win here are getting fewer as I get older. Tursunov was better than me, and in the end that’s why he won.”
Tursunov, playing his first tournament since the embarrassing Davis Cup loss to Great Britain when the Russian went down in five sets to Britain’s 214th ranked James Ward, was not about to argue.
“It wasn’t Ferrer’s best match. He didn’t play his best tennis, “said the 30 year-old world no.66 . “He had the advantage over me because he’s been playing on clay. But I played very quickly and I didn’t make it easy for him.
“Ferrer was the favorite based on surface and ranking. It was a match where there were a lot of opportunities for both players.”
Defending champion Nadal understood Ferrer’s difficulties and admitted he had his problems finishing off a 6-4 6-2 over Argentina’s Carlos Berlocq. “It was a tough day with a lot of wind,” said the Majorcan. “David has also suffered because of this with a rival who likes to hit the ball very hard. This combination favors surprises.”
