Following the recent problems encountered in staging as a neutral venue, the abandoned and now contentious Davis Cup meeting between Pakistan and New Zealand, the Asian state of Myanmar (formerly Burma) has cancelled a series of Davis Cup matches in Yangon citing security fears.
Ties in the Davis Cup’s Asia/Oceania Zone Group Three and Four were planned for this week involving players from Muslim nations such as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Iraq.
However anti-Muslim riots during March left at least 43 people dead and there was more outbreaks of religious violence last week.
Lay Naing, the Myanmar Tennis Federation’s secretary confirmed the International Tennis Federation had voiced security concerns and said: “The other participating countries have also questioned our security.
The ITF website maintained a new date and venue for the round-robin international competition had yet to be identified , but Myanmar tennis officials said it would not take place in their country.
Meanwhile it is understood a decision on the abandoned Pakistan v New Zealand tie will be announced by the ITF early next month.
