A pair of straight-set wins in weekend Fed Cup play on the way to an Australian victory over the Swiss have convinced former US Open winner Samantha Stosur that she may have put her injury troubles behind. The No. 9 has been bothered for the past month by a calf problem, which finally seems to have healed just in time for the start of the spring clay run-up to Roland Garros.
The 29-year-old is testing the dirt this week in Stuttgart after missing WTA play in Indian Wells and Charleston. “It’s an injury where you’re always that little bit concerned about it when you first start again so to come out and play two matches in one day is great,” Stosur told AAP.
“Now I feel good and hopefully that’s going to continue on in the next week or so, so I don’t have to think about it anymore. It’s probably a mental thing more than anything else with this injury so to get over that hurdle is great.”
Stosur believes that the lingering effects of preventative off-season injury surgery are now a thing of the past along with a run of poor 2013 results. “Now that the year has started, I’m getting that tennis under my belt and hopefully I’m going to be able to practice now as much as I normally would.”
The 2010 French Open finalist and 2012 semi-finalist would like to think she has her chances on the European clay despite never winning a title on the continent. She called Roland Garros “a huge motivation.
I know what it feels like now to win one (Grand Slam), it was an absolute dream.”
