With his progress coming along at the Monte Carlo Masters after deciding to play through his ankle injury, Novak Djokovic says he’s glad he made the effort.
The Serb got through this first two matches, winning them both in comeback after dropping the first set as he goes from strength to strength on the ankle which he thought might keep him out of the prestige event.
Djokovic, who has a base in the principality, felt the need to play at “home”” if at all possible, “I was going to come here, so, playing or not playing, I would be spending my time in Monaco. Not playing during the tournament and spending time in Monaco is not really something you are looking forward to.”
The world No. 1 added: “I really had a big desire to play, it’s definitely a motivation more because I like this tournament so much and I like playing here.
“I’m glad I made this decision. The tournament medical team and my own professional team have agreed that I will not damage my ankle furthermore if I participate. For me that was the most important sign. That was a green light that I could be a part of it.”
