When it was announced that Ugo Colombini would join the growing commercial entourage of Andy Murray, the immediate question arose: what will happen to his long-term relationship with former US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro?
The answer is simple; service will continue as normal between the tall Argentine and his Italian manager who have been a double act since Colombini first spotted Del Potro as an impressive schoolboy and always maintained their independence, most notably after the memorable triumph at New York’s Flushing Meadows, when the sport’s financial big hitters like IMG, Octagon and Lagardere Unlimited came calling.
Del Potro reported: “Everything is fine. I have known Ugo since I was 12 years old, and I know Andy from the same age – we played many, many times together.”
Admittedly the two players have had their differences in the past and a shouting match at Rome’s Foro Italico several years ago when Murray maintained his mother Judy was insulted by Del Potro, hardly fostered positive relations.
And Del Potro said: “It’s funny, because when we were juniors we would fight every day, and now we work together.
“Things have happened in the past, but we were young. Now we are professional, we are smart and we have a good relationship.”
Colombini showed his professional ability by securing long-term endorsement deals for Del Potro with marquee firms such as Nike and Wilson.
Murray, who directly approached the Milan-born former player to be his negotiator with tournaments, is well positioned with adidas and Head but wants to add professionalism and tennis know-how to his XIX Entertainment management team under Simon Fuller that up to now has been better versed with show business and soccer.
“I have known Andy almost as long as I have known Juan Martin,” said Colombini who will work in tandem with Murray’s other new recruit Mahesh Bhupathi. “I was flattered to be asked by the world’s No 2 player to represent him.”
