Maria Sharapova presided over a weekend product launch close to her California home as the Grand Slam event champion introduced her Sugarpova sweets line in trendy Manhattan Beach just south of LA and not far from her own home.
The Russian is set to fly to Europe to start her clay campaign in Stuttgart but could not miss the commercial opportunity to unleash more of her sticky sweets on another market. She made an appearance at an upscale gift shop in the city’s commercial area. “I’ve always had a sweet tooth, and I’m a foodie, “said the player who turns 26. “This was just something that was unique, and I’ve always enjoyed doing unique things in my career.”
The world No. 2 has taken the opportunity to show off her now candy line at various debuts in New York as well as Australia and London in recent months. Reports say that Sharapova first proposed the idea of the California shop handling her line when she was in the store for her own shopping.
“We struck up a conversation in December and chatted about carrying her brand in my shop,” the store owner told local media. “From there I asked her if she would join us for a launch, and we worked the schedule out so she could be here in town and be part of the launch. … It’s the first time we’ve done a full-blown launch for a candy line. ”
The Sugarpova line has continually been coming up with new flavors, though the very fit player herself has said she has learned from experience not to get too close to the product on a regular basis. The top-seller is Sporty, which is shaped like small tennis balls.
“It’s coming out soon in Russia, China and Japan,” she said. “That’s our main goal, to bring it global. My fan base is all around the world, and that’s my priority,” she said.
