Singles – Final: (2) Roberta Vinci def. (1) Petra Kvitova 7-6(7-2) 6-1
This was just too itchingly familiar. Petra Kvitova had chances in Roberta Vinci’s last service game of the first set, but couldn’t do anything with them, and it was straight downhill from there. These are the matches she was winning two years ago, when she was threatening to become #1. Now — she may not stay #8 that much longer at this rate. Despite making a final, she adds nothing to her point total. She really needs to start getting some big results.
Roberta Vinci doesn’t earn a lot of big results (in singles, anyway) — but she doesn’t interfere with herself, either. This is career title #8 for her. They’re all bottom-tier, and five of them are on clay (she has one each on indoor hard, outdoor hard, and grass), but still, it’s eight titles. And she has won at least one title for five years running. Her reward will be a small rise, from #13 to #12. As well as her ninth career win over a Top Ten player. This may have been a very small tournament, but we’d call it a pretty big result.
Doubles – Final: Arruabarrena/Dominguez Lino def. Olaru/Solovyeva 6-4 7-5
Let’s be blunt: The field at this event was very weak. Only one team, Groenefeld/Husarova, had a combined ranking better than #100, and they seemed to have something wrong with them and lost early. Only six teams had rankings better than #200. So winning here perhaps doesn’t mean much. But it is the first WTA doubles title for Lara Arruabarrena. For Lourdes Dominguez Lino, it is her second of the year, the first being Acapulco with Parra Santonja.
