SINGLES NOTES

– Almagro has won both previous meetings against Isner, including last year on clay in the Davis Cup semifinals.

– The top two players on the ATP World Tour for aces this season will play in the final. Almagro leads the circuit with 261, while Isner has hit 251.

– Almagro has 19 aces this week, while Isner has hit 57, just shy of the tournament record of 60 hit by Pete Sampras in 2002.

– Almagro is the third winningest active ATP player on clay. The top three:

1. Rafael Nadal 266-20

2. David Ferrer 247-99

3. Nicolas Almagro 216-100

– Almagro is into his first final of 2013 and the 19th of his career, all of which has come on clay. He owns 12 career ATP titles.

– Almagro is the first No. 1 seed to reach the Houston final since James Blake in 2008. He’s seeking to be the first No. 1 seed to win the title since Andy Roddick in 2005.

– For sixth year in a row and the 12th time in the 13 years since the tournament moved to Houston, an American will play in the title match.

– Isner is playing in his 13th career final, and his third on clay, and is aiming for his sixth career title.

– Williams, who had never played an ATP event on clay before this week, was playing his first career ATP semifinal.

– Monaco was defending champion, having defeated Isner in the 2012 final.

– Tennis Channel will carry the final live on Sunday.

 

DOUBLES NOTES

– Murray, the older brother of US Open champion Andy, is a former Wimbledon mixed doubles champion who now owns eight career titles. Peers was playing in his first career ATP final.

– The Bryans were playing in their sixth final at this tournament. They have won the event four times. They are 86-45 in ATP finals and 800-255 overall as a team.
