A new effort conceived of by amateur tennis players – The US Tennis Congress (USTC) – officially launched this week, announcing plans to organize a series of live events around the nation to deliver world-class education on all dimensions of tennis training to amateur adult athletes.
The inaugural Congress will be held October 11-14 in Atlanta, Georgia – a location chosen to honor Atlanta’s special place as home to the world’s largest adult recreational league tennis, the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association (ALTA), comprised of 80,000 members.
The idea behind the USTC is to give passionate adult recreational players an inspiring, intensive, in-person opportunity to learn from Olympic medalists and a world-class faculty about all aspects of training necessary to advance to the next level (technique, movement, strategy, fitness, injury prevention, and mental conditioning)—using both on-court training and innovative and dynamic off-court techniques.
What’s unique is that each US Tennis Congress builds the curriculum around the individual needs of those who take part. Faculty members with expertise in everything from stroke mechanics to strategy to sports psychology to nutrition will use video, “eye trainers,” whiteboards, movement drills, fitness equipment, and other modern tools and techniques. Workshops will be highly participatory and dynamic, designed to keep you engaged, moving and swinging.
When participants register , they are asked for details about their current level and goals so as to understand their priorities. Their answers directly influence the curriculum and determine which classes they will get offered. At the end of every session, they receive a handout with practical “Key Takeaways” to help them retain priority lessons and tips, along with recommended follow-up drills or exercises to help build on what they have learned.
The Atlanta session will appearances by notable coaches and trainers such as Emilio Sanchez, Jeff Salzenstein and Mark Kovacs.
The US Tennis Congress was founded by P.J. Simmons a self-professed Tennisaholic who didn’t start playing until relatively late in life.
