Katowice
Singles – Second Round: (1) Petra Kvitova def. Mandy Minella 7-5 6-2
Given the way this field has opened up, this really looks like Petra Kvitova’s event to win. And, for once, she seems to be playing the way she can.
Singles – Second Round: (2) Roberta Vinci def. Kiki Bertens 2-6 6-3 6-4
Kiki Bertens loses her chance to hit the Top Forty — and she has a lot of points coming off soon. She probably won’t have many more in the near future.
Singles – Second Round: Alexandra Cadantu def. Irina-Camelia Begu 4-6 6-3 6-4
It appears Irina-Camelia Begu will end up right at #50.
Singles – Second Round: Shahar Peer def. Jill Craybas 6-1 6-3
These two would have been among the first names we would have listed had we been asked which WTA players were struggling the most. Guess we know which one was struggling the most-est. Still, this event must have been a big boost for Jill Craybas’s bank account. At least compared to most of her recent events.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Arruabarrena/Dominguez Lino def. (2) Aoyama/Jugic-Salkic 3-6 6-4 10-8
What an event for seeds: Six of eight singles seeds out before the quarterfinal, and no doubles seeds in the semifinal!
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Birnerova/Buryachok def. (4) Voracova/Zakopalova 7-6(7-5) 6-0
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Olaru/Solovyeva def. Pliskova/Pliskova 3-6 6-2 10-2
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Domachowska/Rosolska def. Begu/Camerin 7-6(7-4), retired
Talk about a cheap way to get to the semifinal: Domachowska/Rosolska drew a pair of wildcards in the first round, then the wildcards pulled out, then this. So the two Poles have had to play only one set to reach the semifinal!
