Andy Murray is now due to make a welcome return to the British Davis Cup campaign next September as he competes on the squad for the first time in two years. The world No. 2 last played in a 5-0 defeat of Hungary in zonal play in September, 2011.

Murray was resting after winning Miami as his unheralded teammates achieved the impossible dream of winning a 3-2 tie over Russia after coming from 0-2 down. The achievement will give them a chance to go to the World Group playoffs to be held the week after the US Open, The draw for that event has yet to be made.

Murray has confirmed that he will ‘definitely’ play the tie. A Murray minder told London’s Telegraph: “He said he would play, so it’s something he’s very much still set for in September.”

Murray may not have been at the winning tie in Coventry but he is said to have kept in touch with his teammates via encouraging texts. The hero of the tie, No. 324 Dan Evans, is all but certain to be dropped from the squad in order to make a place for Murray at the No. 1 singles spot.

Meanwhile, the federation kept an open mind on whether its top player would actually front up, were he to, say, repeat at US open champion in a final to be played only four days before a Davis start. Britain could be drawn into ties in Europe or the Far East.
