Katowice
Singles – First Round: (1) Petra Kvitova def. Misaki Doi 6-4 6-4
A reasonably efficient result, given that it was the first clay match of the year for Petra Kvitova, but she needs a title to earn any points at all.
Singles – First Round: (2) Roberta Vinci def. Andrea Hlavackova 6-2 2-0, retired
Andrea Hlavackova almost certainly needs to take a few weeks off to rest and get some things fixed. But she seems to be one of those players who can’t shake the habits she developed in low Challengers; she wants to play, play, play.
Singles – First Round: Alexandra Cadantu def. (7) Sabine Lisicki 7-5 6-2
Sabine Lisicki can’t shake her slump. She should stay Top Fifty this week, but perhaps not much longer.
Singles – Second Round: Maria Elena Camerin def. (3) Klara Zakopalova 7-5 3-6 6-3
Pretty stunning, given Klara Zakopalova’s surface preferences. It appears she will be hitting the Top Twenty, but by a very thin margin.
Singles – Second Round: Karolina Pliskova def. (6) Kaia Kanepi 7-5 6-3
Second match back from a layoff is often the toughest, and throw in the fact that Karolina Pliskova has been playing very well lately and you get this. That will drop Kaia Kanepi, who was defending quarterfinal points, out of the Top Forty. It also means that there are only two seeds left here, Kvitova and Vinci.
Singles – Second Round: Annika Beck def. Lourdes Dominguez Lino 5-7 6-3 6-2
Annika Beck continues her steady progress, leaving Lourdes Dominguez Lino around #60.
Singles – Second Round: Petra Martic def. Anna Schmiedlova 6-4 6-2
Anna Schmiedlova had trounced Alize Cornet in the first round. This would seem to support the belief that Cornet had some problems….
Doubles – First Round: (2) Aoyama/Jugic-Salkic def. Dabrowski/Hrdinova 6-2 1-6 10-5
Doubles – First Round: Begu/Camerin def. (3) Craybas/Minella 6-3 6-3
Doubles – First Round: Birnerova/Buryachok def. Kania/Zaniewska 1-6 6-3 10-8
