Singles – Third Round: (2) Caroline Wozniacki (WC) def. Andrea Petkovic walkover (left leg)
This is one way to get the early match over quickly…. Andrea Petkovic did come out to explain that her leg was hurting, and she didn’t want to aggravate it. This kept alive Caroline Wozniacki’s hopes of returning to #9, but she needed more.
At least she was through on a day when everyone else was contending with rain.
Singles – Third Round: Eugenie Bouchard def. (3) Samantha Stosur 6-1 2-0, retired
It is not good if Samantha Stosur is getting hurt on clay. This left her still #9, for now, but it opened a door for Caroline Wozniacki.
Singles – Third Round: (9) Jelena Jankovic def. Jessica Pegula 6-0 6-4
Jelena Jankovic is starting to add points, but she needs a lot more to climb in the rankings. We’d guess that she would like to; the next player above her is her no-love-lost countrywoman Ana Ivanovic.
Singles – Third Round: Stefanie Voegele def. (10) Julia Goerges 3-6 6-1 6-3
It is likely that Julia Goerges will stay Top Thirty despite the loss, but this means no clinch at this time.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Hlavackova/Huber def. Chan/Govortsova .6-3 6-3
Friday
Singles – Third Round: (1) Serena Williams def. Mallory Burdette 6-4 6-2
This may not have been very close, but Mallory Burdette had a fairly impressive introduction to green clay.
Singles – Third Round: (5) Venus Williams def. (12) Varvara Lepchenko 6-2 4-6 6-2
Ouch. A tough start to a day when Venus had to play two matches. But we’d guess this will suffice to keep Venus Top 25.
Singles – Third Round: (6) Lucie Safarova def. (11) Sorana Cirstea 6-3 5-7 6-1
This put Sorana Cirstea’s Top 25 ranking in some danger; it will depend on how Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova does in Monterrey.
Singles – Third Round: Madison Keys def. Bethanie Mattek-Sands 7-6(7-4) 6-4
This puts Madison Keys just below the Top Sixty.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) Serena Williams def. (6) Lucie Safarova 6-4 6-1
This was a rerun of last year’s final, so someone was guaranteed to lose points. Lucie Safarova at least managed to win four more games this year than last, but the result was the same. And she couldn’t afford the loss of the points as easily as Serena. Safarova will fall to around #25.
Singles – Quarterfinal: Stefanie Voegele def. (2/WC) Caroline Wozniacki 3-6 6-4 6-3
There goes Caroline Wozniacki’s chance to regain the #9 ranking. Samantha Stosur will keep the spot. It was not a pretty ending for Wozniacki. But what a run for Stefanie Voegele. She has beaten, oddly enough, #10 (Wozniacki), #20 (Suarez Navarro), and #30 (Goerges). She was defending 72 points, but it still appears she will rise above #60. Which will be a career high.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) Venus Williams def. Madison Keys 6-4 6-4
The good news was, this put Venus within one win of a return to the Top Twenty. The bad news was, that win has to come against sister Serena.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (8) Jelena Jankovic def. Eugenie Bouchard 6-2 6-1
Still no rankings move for Jelena Jankovic. But she’s had’s back-to-back semifinals, on two different surfaces. It certainly sounds promising.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Moulton-Levy/Zhang def. (4) Goerges/Shvedova 5-7 6-3 10-5

Singles – Second Round: (1) Angelique Kerber def. Alla Kudryavtseva 6-4 4-6 6-2
Angelique Kerber needs a final to add any points, so this was not a promising match.
Singles – Second Round: (3) Maria Kirilenko def. Jovana Jaksic 6-0 4-6 6-1
Maria Kirilenko can’t move above #12 this week no matter what, so she doesn’t want to be playing marathons either.
Singles – Second Round: Lauren Davis def. Coco Vandeweghe 6-4 7-6(10-8)
Lauren Davis is up to around #65.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Birnerova/Tanasugarn def. Gavrilova/Zacarias 6-4 6-3
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Muhammed/Will def. (4) Glushko/Thorpe 6-2 6-4
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Daniilidou/Vandeweghe def. Melichar/M Sanchez 4-6 6-4 10-8
Friday (So Far)
Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) Angelique Kerber def. (8) Ayumi Morita 6-2 6-1
Still no points for Angelique Kerber, but the next win will count. Ayumi Morita will be a little below the Top Forty.
Singles – Quarterfinal: Monica Niculescu def. Timea Babos 7-5 6-2
That finally ends Timea Babos’s winning streak here. Fortunately for her, the points are already off. For Monica Niculescu, this guarantees a return to the Top Fifty.
Doubles – Semifinal: (3) Birnerova/Tanasugarn def. Daniilidou/Vandeweghe walkover
