Key Biscayne, Florida – For those of you keeping tabs on the WTA tour, Belgian Kirsten Flipkens has been one of the hottest players during the Premier events in Indian Wells and Miami. Using a variety of tactics including attacking the net, Flipkens is an all around player that uses skillful slices to confound her opponents. She wears some fashionable Adidas clothes out there to compliment her game, and sports some very spiffy performance lenses that increase her visibility. What you don’t know about her is that she struggled with career-threatening injuries including blood clots for most of 2012, spending time with friend Kim Clijsters at the Clijsters Tennis Academy rebuilding and recovering.
Her most notable wins in the past few weeks are over Monica Niculescu, Alja Tomljanovic, and Petra Kvitova. She really showed inspiring play in closely contested losses against Victoria Azarenka (Indian Wells) and Agnieszka Radwanska (Miami), both in which she was leading by a set and a break.
Flipkens coach, Maxime Braeckman, credits Kirsten for having a lot of confidence at the moment and having fun playing smart tennis. If you watched her matches against Azarenka/Radwanska, you would have seen the level of ability Flipkens has and how she can make even the top gals look stupefied.
With her recent play, Flipkens is expected to jump to #22 in the rankings! If she can continue having fun and playing smart tennis, all signs point to a top 20 ranking by the end of the year. Flipkens is surely happy just to be competing again and seems to be making the most of it so far. With the upcoming clay season, Flipkens game will become even more formidable due to her variety. If you are checking out any of the WTA events in the next few months, keep an eye out for the splendid Kirsten Flipkens!
