Miami
Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) Maria Sharapova def. (8) Sara Errani 7-5 7-5
Maria Sharapova was making errors by the truckload in this match — not a good idea against Sara Errani, who is very good at stretching out points. It’s a big reason the match went two and a half hours despite finishing in two sets. They played 206 points in those 24 games — an average of more than eight points per game. So Errani will remain stuck at #7; Angelique Kerber will keep the #6 ranking… for now.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (22) Jelena Jankovic def. (15) Roberta Vinci 6-4 6-7(6-8) 6-3
After Jelena Jankovic lost the second set of this, it seemed inevitable that she would have another of her slow fizzle-downs. We’ve seen too many of those lately! But she managed to come back, and will rise to #18. Roberta Vinci will have to settle for #13; she would have been #12 had she won.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Petrova/Srebotnik def. (8) Goerges/Shvedova 6-4 7-6(7-3)
Nadia Petrova won’t rise above #3 any time soon, but at the rate things are going, Katarina Srebotnik might well be Top Five before summer rolls around.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Kuznetsova/Pennetta def. (5) Huber/Martinez Sanchez walkover
It seems as if health is always an issue for Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and those around her….
