IMX, a joint venture of sports and entertainment between EBX Group and IMG Worldwide, officially announced the only tournament in South America to host a combined ATP World Tour 500 and WTA International event, the Rio Open February 15- 23, 2014. The event will take place at the Brazilian Jockey Club with eight clay courts, including a stadium that houses 7,000 people.
The prize money will be a whopping $1.25 million dollars for the ATP and $ 235,000 for the WTA.
The Rio Open joins other global events in the city, such as the 2016 Olympics and the World Cup in 2014, Rock in Rio, New Year’s Eve in Copacabana and Carnival, strengthening Rio de Janeiro as one of the major worldwide destinations for big events.
The Rio Open is one of only three ATP 500 tournaments on clay in the world, along with Barcelona and Hamburg. Rio organizers purchased the event from Memphis.
“The Rio Open is here to stay and it will be the largest annual sporting event in the city of Rio de Janeiro,” said Alan Adler, CEO of IMX.
WTA CEO Stacey Allaster, ATP Americas CEO Mark Young and ATP Chief Player Officer’s Andre Silva were on hand for the official announcement.
