Miami

Late Thursday

Singles – First Round: Eugenie Bouchard def. Shahar Peer 4-6 6-1 6-4

Shahar Peer will remain stuck below the Top Hundred. Eugenie Bouchard is still below #100 also, but she at least is getting closer rather than losing ground.

Singles – First Round: Silvia Soler-Espinosa def. Pauline Parmentier 6-0 6-7(2-7) 6-2

The rain gave Pauline Parmentier a brief additional lease of life here, but she is now ranked behind Silvia Soler-Espinosa, and going nowhere; she will remain in the #80 range.

Singles – First Round: Zheng Jie def. Yaroslava Shvedova 7-5 6-4

Yaroslava Shvedova started well in this contest, but she really seems to have trouble holding things together. That will cost her at least one, and possible two or three, ranking spots. Zheng Jie still needs one more win to defend her points.

Singles – First Round: Donna Vekic def. Yulia Putintseva 7-6(7-4) 6-0

Two promising young players, ranked only two places apart. Donna Vekic will presumably be the higher-ranked after this.

Singles – First Round: Anabel Medina Garrigues def. Alexandra Dulgheru 5-7 6-4 7-6(7-3)

Alexandra Dulgheru keeps looking promising — but losing. Hard to get her match toughness back this way….

Singles – First Round: Bethanie Mattek-Sands def. Monica Puig 6-4 7-5

This probably means that Monica Puig will have to wait a little longer to reach the Top Hundred.

Singles – First Round: Francesca Schiavone def. Jana Cepelova 5-7 6-4 6-4

This is one of the few times in recent months that Francesca Schiavone has added points. It might take her as high as #45.

Singles – First Round: Christina McHale def. Anett Kontaveit 6-2 6-1

Anett Kontaveit’s junior results are promising, but she keeps getting shoved into WTA situations that are above her head — and suffering. At least it lets Christina McHale defend her points, which hasn’t happened much lately.

Singles – First Round: Madison Keys def. Allie Kiick 6-0 6-0

Madison Keys is only a little older than Allie Kiick, but the experience gap is large. And getting larger, by the looks of things…. Keys needs one more win to defend her points.

Friday

Singles – Second Round: (1) Serena Williams def. Flavia Pennetta 6-1 6-1

Two more wins and Serena Williams will clinch the #1 ranking.

Singles – Second Round: (4) Agnieszka Radwanska def. Su-Wei Hsieh 6-3 6-2

A pretty efficient start for Agnieszka Radwanska in her title defence; she leaves Hsieh Su-Wei still below #35.

Singles – Second Round: (5) Na Li def. Kiki Bertens 6-3 6-1

A good start for Li Na, considering that she missed Indian Wells. She costs Kiki Bertens about sixty points; Bertens will probably lose two or three spots.

Singles – Second Round: (7) Petra Kvitova def. Shuai Peng 5-7 6-2 6-2

Peng Shuai just missed seeding, so it’s not a big surprise that she gave Petra Kvitova a lot of trouble. She loses 30 points, though, as well as any chance to climb.

Singles – Second Round: (9) Caroline Wozniacki def. Karolina Pliskova 5-7 6-3 6-3

A tough start for Caroline Wozniacki, who needs two more wins to keep the #9 ranking.

Singles – Second Round: (WC) Andrea Petkovic def. (10) Marion Bartoli 6-3 4-1, retired

Given the rate of problems on the men’s side, it’s perhaps no surprise that retirements started to bite the women as well. But it’s tough for Marion Bartoli, who was a semifinalist last year; she will fall from #11 to no better than #13.

Singles – Second Round: (13) Dominika Cibulkova def. Kristina Mladenovic 6-2 6-3

Dominika Cibulkova has been struggling a bit, but it looks as if she’s solved that. This should suffice to keep her Top Fifteen at least.

Singles – Second Round: (16) Sloane Stephens def. Olga Govortsova 0-6 6-4 6-4

Sloane Stephens sets up her meeting with Venus Williams — a meeting she needs to win to defend her points….

Singles – Second Round: Romina Oprandi def. (17) Lucie Safarova 7-6(7-4) 4-6 7-6(7-5)

Lucie Safarova isn’t having a very good year, but she wasn’t defending anything, so she should stay Top Twenty.

Singles – Second Round: (19) Venus Williams def. Kimiko Date-Krumm 7-6(7-3) 3-6 6-4

Evidently Venus Williams has not been watching Kimiko Date-Krumm’s results over the last few years, which show Date-Krumm winning a very high fraction of her matches by simply stretching out her opponents. Venus kept building leads and letting them slip away. She survived this time — but she needs at least one more win to stay Top Twenty….

Singles – Second Round: Garbine Muguruza def. (23) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 4-6 6-2 6-2

After some not-very-impressive results late last year and early this, Garbine Muguruza is playing very well, with a Round of Sixteen at Florianopolis, another at Indian Wells, and now this. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will remain around #25.

Singles – Second Round: Ajla Tomljanovic def. (24) Julia Goerges 7-6(7-4) 6-2

Julia Goerges lost her opener here last year also, so this doesn’t cost her points, but others have added, so she will fall at least two spots.

Singles – Second Round: (25) Varvara Lepchenko def. Irina-Camelia Begu 6-3 6-4

Even with the loss, Irina-Camelia Begu might hit the Top Fifty. It will be close.

Singles – Second Round: Magdalena Rybarikova def. (27) Mona Barthel 6-3 7-6(7-5)

Mona Barthel was defending 80 points, so this will cost her her Top 25 spot. Magdalena Rybarikova should rise to around #45.

Singles – Second Round: (30) Kirsten Flipkens def. Stefanie Voegele 6-4 6-2

This should guarantee Kirsten Flipkens’s Top Thirty ranking — she’s surprisingly close to the Top 25.

Singles – Second Round: Ayumi Morita def. (31) Yanina Wickmayer 7-6(7-2) 2-6 6-3

Yanina Wickmayer loses her Top Thirty spot; we’d guess she’ll be at or just above #35.

Doubles – First Round: Raymond/Robson def. (6) Kops-Jones/Spears 7-5 6-2

Lisa Raymond once, in effect, “adopted” Samantha Stosur as a project/doubles partner, and it worked quite well. Is she trying it again?

Doubles – First Round: (8) Goerges/Shvedova def. Jurak/Marosi 2-6 7-5 10-8

Doubles – First Round: Babos/Minella def. Dekmeijere/Govortsova .6-2 6-2

Doubles – First Round: Hantuchova/Medina Garrigues def. Keys/Tomljanovic .6-2 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Groenefeld/Martic def. King/Niculescu .2-6 6-2 11-9

Doubles – First Round: Hsieh/Peng def. Lucic-Baroni/Zheng 1-6 6-2 10-6

Pretty soon, Hsieh/Peng will start getting seeded — and a lot of potential opponents will be happy. They’re proving to be pretty good upset artists.

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
