Serena Williams is apparently keeping any hopes she might have for a sixth title at the Miami Masters somewhat under wraps.
The multiple champion who has not played a WTA match since losing the final in Doha more than a month ago to Victoria Azarenka, has since pulled out of Dubai and did not bother to play Indian Wells, which she and her sister Venus have boycotted for a dozen years after a 2000 crowd incident.
Williams, who maintains an address in Florida while spending much of her free time in LA and Paris, said is back on the top ranking after displacing Azarenka, with Indian Wells champion Maria Sharapova on second.
“It feels good to be on top, especially after everything, “said Williams, who barely had interest in an obligatory media conference which she needed after skipping an event set for the day before.
The former winner played down her expectations after “working so hard and just really not expecting much. It’s exciting to be there (No. 1) again. I just focus on every match that I play, from the first round to the last. I don’t fear anybody, and I don’t like that word per se. But I’m cautious of everyone I think is a better way to put it.”
The top seed opens in the second round after a bye handed to all 32 men’s and women’s seeds as she plays a match with Italian Flavia Pennetta.
