Indian Wells
Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) N Djokovic def. (8) J Tsonga 6-3 6-1
It seemed to take about four games for Novak Djokovic to arrive on the court. Then — lights out. He didn’t lose a single point on serve in the second set. Djokovic is going to leave here with in excess of a 4000 point lead on his nearest rival. Tsonga will remain at #8.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (7) J del Potro def. (3) A Murray 6-7(5-7) 6-3 6-1
Maybe Roger Federer can take Miami off after all. For the moment, at least, his #2 ranking is safe.
This was truly a pitched battle, taking about two and a half hours, but Juan Martin del Potro was never broken. He broke once early in the second set, and repeatedly in the third, to become the lowest-ranked of the four semifinalists. At least, the lowest-ranked for now. He could still rise to #6 — if and only if he wins Indian Wells, beating Rafael Nadal in the final.
Andy Murray will keep the #3 ranking. And he’ll have another shot at #2 at Miami. But a slightly better performance here and he wouldn’t have had to worry about it….
Doubles – Semifinal: Huey/Janowicz def. Peya/Soares 7-5 1-6 12-10
This was a crazy match tiebreak. Peya/Soares were down 7-5, then went up 9-8 and serving, and couldn’t finish it off. This result doesn’t seem like it would have been the best practice for the final….
