Managing long hours of waiting for a late-starting match is all part of player life at most events, with the Indian Wells Masters no exception. Caroline Wozniacki has become an expert at filling her time, with the former No. 1 big on sleeping whenever possible and at all hours.
Most name players at the Californian desert venue tend to rent houses where they can chill for most of the day before heading to the Tennis Garden for battle. Wozniacki, bidding for a semi-final spot when she plays Victoria Azarenka, spelled out the movements of a recent match day.
“I woke up at 9:15, and then I went for a run, 40-minute run outside in the beautiful weather; I had some breakfast; chilled for a little bit; went back, had a little nap; talked to Rory; saw the Barcelona play; I had some lunch and sat with my parents; went up and had another little nap; and then packed my stuff and got ready to get here and had a longer warmup and then got ready for the match.
“There’s not much else really you could do. I wish I could lie by the pool all the day and just chill, but that probably wouldn’t be the smartest idea when you have play.”
The Dane said that despite all the empty hours, time goes by quickly. “I’m a good sleeper, so I think that helps. I can sleep anytime, anywhere. Just as long as I can lie flat and as long as I have a decent pillow, I’m good to go.
“I’m lucky with that. Even when I play night matches I can sleep during the day and I have no problem with it.”
